Tire Size Formula Explained

A metric tire such as 225/50R17 contains three key values. The first number is width in millimeters. The second number is the sidewall ratio as a percentage of width. The final number is the wheel diameter in inches.

Sidewall height = width × aspect ratio ÷ 100
Overall diameter = wheel diameter + 2 × sidewall height
Circumference = diameter × π
Revs per mile = 63,360 ÷ circumference in inches

The sidewall is counted twice because a tire has rubber above and below the wheel. Since the wheel diameter is measured in inches and the sidewall starts in millimeters, the calculator converts millimeters to inches before adding the values.
