What is sleep debt?

Sleep debt is the cumulative gap between the sleep you need and the sleep you actually get. For example, if your target is 8 hours but you sleep 6.5 hours, that day adds 1.5 hours of sleep debt.

This tool focuses on practical weekly tracking. It is useful for students, shift workers, parents, busy professionals, and anyone trying to understand why they may feel tired even after one longer night of rest.

Sleep debt formula

Daily sleep debt = max(0, target sleep โˆ’ actual sleep)

Total sleep debt = sum of daily sleep debt

Net sleep balance = total actual sleep โˆ’ total target sleep

The calculator also shows catch-up surplus when your actual sleep is higher than your target on a specific day. Surplus is helpful for understanding weekend catch-up, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed medical recovery score.

Example calculation

Suppose your target is 8 hours per night and you sleep 6.5 hours every night for 7 days.

  • Daily debt: 8 โˆ’ 6.5 = 1.5 hours
  • Weekly sleep debt: 1.5 ร— 7 = 10.5 hours
  • Result: 10 hours 30 minutes of estimated sleep debt

How to reduce sleep debt safely

Start with small, realistic improvements. Try going to bed 15โ€“30 minutes earlier, keeping a stable wake-up time, reducing late caffeine, and avoiding bright screens close to bedtime.

Sleep Debt Calculator FAQs

What is sleep debt?

Sleep debt is the difference between the amount of sleep your body needs and the amount of sleep you actually get over time. This calculator estimates that difference using your target sleep and your sleep log.

How is sleep debt calculated?

For each day, the calculator compares your target sleep with your actual sleep. If actual sleep is lower than the target, the difference is counted as sleep debt. Weekly sleep debt is the total of those daily shortfalls.

Can weekend sleep remove all sleep debt?

Longer weekend sleep may reduce your net weekly shortfall, but it may not fully reverse the effects of repeated poor sleep. A consistent schedule is usually better than relying only on catch-up sleep.

What sleep target should adults use?

Many adults use a target between 7 and 9 hours per night. Choose a target that matches your age, routine, and how much sleep helps you feel rested.
