1. Chinese Lunar Calendar

One of the most widely referenced folk prediction methods worldwide. The traditional Chinese gender prediction chart uses the mother's lunar age at conception and the lunar month of conception. When both values are even or both are odd, it predicts girls. When they differ in parity, it predicts boys. For twins, this produces a single combined prediction rather than individual ones.

Multiple studies have evaluated the Chinese gender chart and found it performs at approximately 50% accuracy — statistically indistinguishable from chance. A 2010 study in the journal Paediatric and Perinatal Epidemiology found no evidence of predictive validity. It remains popular because coincidences are memorable and misses are forgotten.

This theory states that a fetal heart rate above 140 bpm indicates a girl, while below 140 indicates a boy. 4. Food Cravings

The cravings theory holds that sweet cravings indicate girls, while salty or savoury cravings indicate boys. Some versions link sour cravings to boys and protein/meat cravings to boys as well. The folk logic suggests that carrying girls raises sugar demand, while boys raise protein and mineral needs.

There's no scientific evidence for this. Food cravings in pregnancy are driven by nutritional needs, hormonal changes, and heightened sensory sensitivity — none of which are reliably sex-specific. Twin pregnancies tend to have stronger cravings overall due to elevated hormone levels, but the direction of those cravings doesn't predict the genders. Still, as a conversation piece, this one generates strong opinions.

5. Sleep Position

This folk belief holds that sleeping on the left side indicates boys, while preferring the right side indicates girls. The basis is murky — some versions claim it relates to which side the dominant baby is lying on, others to blood flow patterns. Practically speaking, doctors recommend that pregnant women sleep on their left side regardless of baby gender, because it improves blood flow to the placenta and kidneys.

For twin pregnancies specifically, sleep position becomes largely a matter of physical comfort given the size and position of two babies — not a reliable indicator of either baby's sex.

6. Ring / Pendulum Test

Hang a ring or needle on a length of thread over the pregnant belly. If it swings in circles, tradition says girl; if it swings back and forth, boy. This is perhaps the most theatrically fun of all gender prediction methods — and the one most obviously reliant on ideomotor effect (involuntary muscle movements that make the hand holding the thread move in response to expectations).

For twin pregnancies, practitioners of the ring test sometimes perform it twice in sequence, reading the first swing for Twin A and the second for Twin B. The method has zero predictive validity but makes for an excellent party activity. Some versions of the test suggest the ring will pause and change direction between readings if the twins are different genders — which is both unverifiable and genuinely entertaining to watch.

Identical vs. Fraternal: What Twin Type Means for Gender

Twin type is the single most important factor in understanding the possible gender combinations — and it's one that old wives' tales almost entirely ignore.

Identical twins (monozygotic) form when a single fertilised egg splits into two. Because both embryos develop from the same genetic material, they carry identical sex chromosomes. This means identical twins are almost always the same sex — either both boys or both girls. The split can happen up to about 13 days after fertilisation, and the timing affects whether the twins share a placenta and amniotic sac. But regardless of when the split occurs, the sex chromosomes are the same in both embryos.

The extreme exception — a chromosomal event causing one identical twin to be a different sex — is estimated to occur in roughly 1 in 1 million twin births. For all practical purposes, identical twins means same-sex twins.

What Actually Determines Twin Gender

Gender (biological sex) is determined at fertilisation by the sex chromosome contributed by the sperm. Eggs always carry an X chromosome. Sperm carry either X (producing a girl, XX) or Y (producing a boy, XY). At the moment of fertilisation, the chromosome combination is set.

For fraternal twins, this happens twice independently — two sperm, two eggs, two separate chromosomal outcomes. The sex of one fraternal twin has no effect on the sex of the other. They're genetically no more similar than any other pair of siblings.

There's no food, position, timing, or behaviour that reliably influences whether a sperm carrying X or Y fertilises an egg. Theories about "Y sperm swimming faster" or "X sperm living longer" have been studied extensively and haven't produced reliable methods for sex selection in natural conception. The outcome is, for practical purposes, random for each fertilisation event.

What can slightly shift the odds of fraternal (not identical) twins? Maternal age — older mothers are more likely to release two eggs in a cycle. Are boy-girl twins always fraternal?

With the extreme exception mentioned above (less than 1 in 1 million cases), yes. Boy-girl twins are always fraternal because identical twins are genetically identical and therefore the same sex. If your twins are confirmed boy-girl by ultrasound, they are fraternal (dizygotic) twins — no genetic testing is needed to confirm this. This is actually useful information: fraternal twins don't share a placenta (dichorionic) in most cases, which has implications for monitoring and delivery planning.

Is there any scientific method for predicting gender before ultrasound?

Yes — NIPT (non-invasive prenatal testing), also called cell-free DNA testing, analyses fragments of fetal DNA circulating in the mother's blood.
